A chapter in the book “Indigenizing Knowledge for Climate Action: Strategies, Case Studies and Testimonios” Mastracci Sánchez, D., & Villarreal, A. (Eds.). (2023). Indigenizing education for climate action: Strategies, case studies and testimonios. Pressbooks.
William Commanda (North American Indigenous Leader, Algonquin Elder and Carrier of Wampum Heritage, Canoe Builder, Hon. PhD and Officer of the Order of Canada), passionately concerned about environmental issues for most of his adult life, formally began Indigenizing Knowledge for Climate Action in 1987 at the first Aboriginal Constitutional Conference, in 1991 at the United Nations COP (Conference of Partners) Pre-Rio Earth Summit, and at the 1993 United Nations Cry of the Earth Conference of Indigenous Peoples, as well as in his annual Circle of All Nations gathering, and outreach to environmental organizations, governments and public at large.
I was invited to contribute a chapter to the book “Indigenizing Knowledge for Climate Action: Strategies, Case Studies and Testimonios” by Diana Mastracci Sánchez, and I was supported in its preparation by Professor D. R. Fraser Taylor (supervisor of my doctoral and postdoctoral research into William Commanda’s environmental legacy) and several Circle of All Nations environmentalists.
We shall be discussing this chapter with three of our colleagues who have contributed to this work:
