Can coaches contribute to reaching the UN’s 17 global sustainable development goals (UNSDG)?

On the occasion of COP28 in Dubai, the Heriot Watt University Coaching Lab invites four expert panellists Eve Turner, Ivan Yong, Louise Lambert and Stuart Pickles to answer this and other questions.

Together, they provide thought-provoking insights and practical suggestions on why and how coaching and coaches can contribute to reducing inequality, tackling climate change and fostering economic growth. 

Through the panellists’ perspectives on different aspects of the UNSDG, participants will learn how social responsibility, climate change and well-being – both physical and mental – can form part of every coaching conversation.

As the 11 signatories (including the largest industry bodies from coaching, coaching psychology, mentoring and supervision) write in their Joint Global Statement: “Coaching, mentoring, coaching psychology and supervision are concerned with developing the potential of human beings, of raising awareness to enable people to take responsibility for their actions and ownership for their contribution. We have a significant role to play in fostering new ways of being in service to a healthy human society and a healthy planet.”

Eve Turner is a global coach and supervisor, co-author of 4 books including two published this year: ‘Ecological and Climate-Conscious Coaching: A Companion Guide to Evolving Coaching Practice’ and ‘The Ethical Coaches’ Handbook’. She writes extensively on ethics, contracting and systemic working.

Eve is one of the 3 co-founders of the Climate Coaching Alliance which has nearly 4,000 members worldwide and co-founded the Global Supervisors’ Network. She is also one of the authors of the coaching professional bodies’ Joint Statement on Climate Change, now signed by 11 bodies representing around 300,000 coaches, mentors, coaching psychologists and supervisors globally.

He qualified as a coach 15+ years ago and established and led the internal coaching practice at Foster’s. He then set up as a professional executive coach 10+ years ago and has become recognised as a successful leadership coach, working with a wide range of clients and sectors, operating at senior levels in several large blue-chip organisations. He combines psychological insight and human wisdom with strategic and commercial acumen, enabling leaders to clarify their purpose and values, bring their attention to people and nature as well as profit and cash, and develop pathways to creating a regenerative future for their organisations, society, and the planet.<br><br> He is founder and MD of www.aimhigherleadership.com, and is an associate of sustainability consultancies www.leadersquest.org and www.lspleadership.com. He has become increasingly active in the coaching profession, focusing on regenerative leadership and environmental sustainability.
